Last week, collaborators on the ANCIENTROMANS project presented the results of their research at two scientific meetings taking place in Denver, USA. At the 53rd Annual North America Meeting of the Paleopathology Association, which took place from March 17th to 18th, Mario Novak, Mario Cari\u0107 and Barbara Krileti\u0107 participated with a podium presentation entitled \u201cLiving on an island in Graeco-Roman times: Reconstruction of general health and diet of the ancient inhabitants of Issa (Vis, Croatia)\u201d. At the 95th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Biological Anthropologists held from March 18th to 21st, Mario Novak and Hrvoje Vuli\u0107 participated with a podium presentation \u201eHuman Remains in (Bio)archaeology: Ethical Dilemmas and Practices from a Croatian Perspective\u201c, Anna J. Osterholtz, Mario Novak and Mario Cari\u0107 participated with a poster presentation \u201eLead-Induced Metabolic Disease in non-adults from Roman-period Croatia: Paleopathological and Chemical Analyses from the Tragurium Communal Necropolis\u201c, while Anna J. Osterholtz, Mario Novak and Mario Cari\u0107 were co-authors of the poster presentation \u201eBuried in a well: An osteobiographical study of two non-adult individuals from Roman period Mursa (Osijek, Croatia)\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, February 12, 2026, the Laboratory for Evolutionary Anthropology and Bioarchaeology was visited by students from the First Gymnasium in Zagreb, together with their professor Luka Miheli\u0107. During the visit, the students learned about different aspects of the life and death of our ancient ancestors that can be obtained through the study of their biological remains.

A study entitled “Multidisciplinary study of human remains from the 3rd century mass grave in the Roman city of Mursa, Croatia” was published this Wednesday, October 15, 2025, in PLOS One. The study investigates the remains of Roman soldiers who lost their lives in the battle of Mursa in 260 CE. The first author of the study is Mario Novak, and one of the coauthors is Mario Cari\u0107.
